The Nintendo Switch has taken the world by storm thanks to the masterpiece of a game that is Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild. According to SuperData, the Nintendo Switch has sold over 1.5 million copies worldwide, successfully living up to its hype. While everybody had high hopes for the Nintendo Switch pre-launch, there was also a lot of controversy following the information about the battery life, and limited titles. People were worried that the Switch's battery life was just too short and that the amount of AAA titles available upon launch were not enough to justify it's somewhat high price.
Nearly a couple weeks after launch, all complaints and doubts about the Switch have virtually disappeared, mostly thanks to The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild. Many Switch owner would most likely agree that there is not a huge number of titles available for the Switch just yet, but that Breath of the Wild is a console seller by itself. Some are calling it one of the best games every, and honestly, it's got me wanting to buy the console just so I can experience it. I've learned my lesson about hype, so I wasn't too hesitant to jump onto the train this time, but it seems as though the Nintendo Switch has lived up to its hype, and it's 1.5 million copies sold so far is an example of just that.
Even more astonishing is that (via gameindustry) these figures were collected mostly in the first week of the Switch's launch, so the number is bound to be considerably higher by now. SuperData says that around 500,000 units were sold in the US, 360,000 were sold in Japan with Europe not far behind. The data tracker observed that 85,000 units were sold in the UK, with France managing to sell 110,000 units. As now surprise, SuperData also says that 89% of Switch owners also bought The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild. With just that statistic alone, it's clear how much of an impact that Breath of the Wild had on the sales figures. Nintendo has previously announced that their goal is to hit 2 million units sold by the end of March and based on the consistency, it looks like they will reach that goal. It's also important to note that SuperData counts sales made 'through' retailers, while Nintendo's financial reports count sales 'to' retailers, so it's entirely possible that they have already reached their goal.
The Nintendo Switch has without a doubt had a fantastic launch, but the question remains whether or not Nintendo can continue its success in the long run. While people are enjoying Breath of the Wild at this moment in time, Nintendo will definitely have to bring more AAA titles to the table for people to continue playing the switch as much as they are now. Other than Mario Kart 8 Deluxe launching next month, there isn't very much in store for the Switch that has been announced yet. Until then, Breath of the Wild binges will continue on strong.
