With Microsoft and Sony both offering an online experience for a price, Nintendo has decided to follow suit. They have recently announced that they will be released a paid online service for the Switch console later on this year. This has a lot of people scratching their heads (myself included) because Nintendo has never really come out with an online component that was worth any extra money.
If your first thought after reading that was, "maybe this time they will make one worth money", I would keep reading.
Since Microsoft and Sony have been giving out free and discounted games to players that purchase a membership, Nintendo is planning on giving a little to the players as well. They've decided that your money will be worth a free NES or SNES game each month. Sounds pretty decent right? I mean, there aren't many Switch games out. Well, you won't get to keep this game. These outdated, 20 to 30-year-old games can only be rented by the subscriber for the duration of the month.
I don't know about you, but I find that a bit greedy. In addition to that, the Switch won't have an in-game party system or chat. You will have to use an iOS or Android application in order to talk with your friends. So, do they expect me to sit in the corner of my room holding a controller for my Switch while my phone is charging in the wall to avoid total drainage while my headphones are plugged into it for voice communication with my friends? Nintendo, this is a baby attempt at an online service. For the good of your console and players, please do not make anybody pay for something as broken as this.
