Nintendo isn’t typically one to brag about numbers: in the past, it was because they weren’t that proud of them, and then later, it just became another chunk of info for the Big N to withhold unless it
was sufficiently impressive to make headlines. But even when we heard sales numbers, it was always for first-party Nintendo games exclusively. If you were a smaller or third-party developer and you wanted to talk about sales, you always had to do it yourself. Nintendo wasn’t gonna do it for you.
Well, for the first time ever,
Nintendo is breaking its silence on indie game sales and have listed out the top-10 bestselling indies that are being offered on the Nintendo Switch:
- SteamWorld Dig 2
- Stardew Valley
- Kamiko
- Celeste
- Fast RMX
- Golf Story
- Enter the Gungeon
- Overcooked Special Edition
- NBA Playgrounds
- Shovel Knight: Treasure Trove
There’s a lot that Nintendo decided to omit on this list: for example, they’re all unordered, so we don’t know which game is outselling which. This obviously means we also
don’t know exactly how many of each title has been sold so far. But that doesn’t mean the list is worthless: the inclusion of Enter the Gungeon and Celeste, both games that were only recently released on the Switch, shows that these games are still selling very, very well, and that the indie market on the Switch is likely still on the rise.
It also speaks well for the quality of these games: all of which have gotten high praise from fans and critics alike. While Nintendo isn’t perfect when it comes to blocking out the crap titles (what company is?) it’s far better at quality control than, say, Steam is, and so it’s proving to be a popular platform for these kind of titles. That doesn’t look to be changing anytime soon.
So that’s cool.
