The success of the Nintendo Switch is undeniable. But how it stacks up to others is where it counts, especially during the holiday season. According to a Nintendo press release, the company sold more Switch units than any other video game system in December 2017.
This is according to NPD Group, an organization that tracks the sales of video games in the United States. They reported that 1.5 million Nintendo Switch consoles were sold during the month of December, beating out the Xbox One X, having released only a month prior. Since the Switch's release in March, the console has sold over 4.8 million units. That marks it as the fastest selling home console in U.S. History.
Though you don't need to be a new console to sell well, you just need to be Nintendo. The Nintendo 3DS branch has also had an incredibly successful month, the best since December 2014. The many variations of the 3DS combined to sell over 750,000 units, pushing the handheld family to reach the 21 million sales milestone.
Combine the 3DS sales with that of the Switch and the Super NES Classic, that makes over 2.6 million console units sold in December. That's over half of all gaming hardware sold that month.
After a somewhat poor market performance by the Nintendo Wii U, the company's financial situation was beginning to look bleak. This is proof that they still have that magic that makes amazing games, and amazing consoles to play them.
