Whenever Nintendo releases a 3D Zelda game, it tends to be big news unless it’s Tri Force Heroes. And near the end of the Wii’s life, Nintendo decided to give their most popular console the grand farewell it deserved with a brand-new 3D Zelda adventure, The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword, which not only had pretty amazing motion controls but also positioned itself as the first game in the Zelda timeline, making it pretty darn important from a story perspective.
That said, it’s also a controversial game, as fans weren’t really in love with the linear world, the backtracking, and the fact it was running on a fairly old system. Because of this, it sold unusually badly for a 3D Zelda game.
Which is why it came as a bit of a surprise that Zelda producer Eiji Aonuma, when speaking at two different Zelda concerts at Japan, reportedly told people that a Switch version of Skyward Sword might be in the works.
This report (which came word-of-mouth but was repeated by Game Informer) suggested that at the end of the show, he reportedly stood in front of the audience and, perhaps teasing them in the event they were expecting an announcement, said: "I know what you're thinking, Skyward Sword on Switch, right?"
Now, to be fair, that absolutely sounds like a joke. But on the other hand, this man has a long history of bluntly stating new Zelda projects, and Nintendo is currently on a Zelda re-release binge, having remastered Ocarina of Time, Majora’s Mask, and A Link Between Worlds in recent years. Skyward Sword would have never been at the top of my list of Zelda Games I expected to be re-released, but it sure as hell isn’t at the bottom either.
So is this just a joke or a sign of things to come? I guess we’ll have to see.
UPDATE: So apparently Nintendo shut down this rumor.
