While the arms race between the PS4 and the Xbox One has been getting heated, Nintendo has found a certain kind of success just doin’ its own thing. Being considered out of the running is as much a blessing as it is a curse, because it’s enabled Nintendo games to just stand alone, not really ‘compared’ to any other games--if you have a Wii U, there are games you’ll want and games you don’t, rather than the constant struggle of deciding which version you want, which has the best features, if your PC can handle it, etc…
Nintendo’s formula, however unique it might be, is not completely divorced from the tactics of its non-competition. Like Sony and Microsoft, Nintendo is every bit as prone to re-release a game or two--especially if it’s a Zelda game. Actually, in retrospect, I think Star Fox Zero is the first non-Zelda game they’ve re-released in recent years... then again, the title is actually original...
Regardless, Nintendo has a mind for re-releases, and as it turns out, it seems there are signs that the next big Nintendo HD remake will be none other than the critically acclaimed 2006 Legend of Zelda adventure, Twilight Princess. Because that’s definitively what fans want more than that Open-World Zelda game you keep teasing us with.
Anyway, the rumor comes from Nintendo Hacking fanatics, WiiUBrew, which found the word “THE LEGEND OF ZELDA Twilight Princess HD” in the latest update to the Japanese eShop. And yes, that’s literally all we’re working on right now, because Nintendo has yet to comment on the possibility.
Regardless, Twilight Princess was one of my favorite Zelda games (second only to Majora’s Mask, closely tied with Skyward Sword) so I certainly wouldn’t mind an HD remake--and 9 years (oh god, has it already been 9 years?!) is certainly long enough to warrant it, but… yeah, I think I’d still prefer to see that new Zelda game, Nintendo. Hop to it.
