Nintendo Isn't Making a Legend of Zelda Show After All

I have good/bad news for all you Legend of Zelda fans: you won’t get to see Link star in his own Game of Thrones after all; Nintendo Boss Satoru Iwata has flat-out denied the rumors.

Speculation that Nintendo was in talks with Netflix to produce a ‘family friendly’ Game of Thrones style show starring Link and his fellows in Hyrule was started when the Wall Street Journal reported that Netflix was in the early stages of development. Other than that, we knew nothing, but from the get-go it was a slightly more believable rumor than it would have been normally. In years past, talking about Nintendo producing a show off one of its IP’s would have been more-or-less inconceivable, unless it was an anime, and that IP was Pokémon. But following the Sony hacks and the very real reveal that Sony had purchased the filming rights for the Mario Brothers, the idea of a Netflix Legend of Zelda show seemed… plausible.

However, in a recent interview published by Time Magazine, CEO Satoru Iwata straight-up put those rumors to rest.

"As of now, I have nothing new to share with you in regard to the use of our IPs for any TV shows or films, but I can at least confirm that the [Legend of Zelda] article in question is not based on correct information,"

So there you have it; we’re mistaken. There is no Legend of Zelda show in the works. Now, I’ll grant you this much, it’s not impossible he’s just lying; that kind of thing is fairly normal for a company, and the wording is certainly vague enough to give it some wiggle room. But really, of any IP for Nintendo to turn live-action, Zelda might not really be the one—Link has only spoken twice and both times he was hated for it, so, it might be easier to do something else, like, say, Metroid.

Now, a Metroid Game of Thrones show would be interesting… I have no idea how it would work, but I know I want to see it, badly.
