Now, look, I’m as sympathetic as the next guy for the plight of the consumer. We’re the ones keeping these businesses afloat, we’re the ones who love their IPs, we’re the ones who devote time and energy to make wikis and screenshots and figurines or whatever… but there comes a time when people just need to let it go. Case in point: Mass Effect 3. Was the ending unsatisfying? Yes. Could it have been better? Definitely. But was it worth hosting a multi-month protest with rallies, bribes, and petitions? No. No it was not.
And I fear Federation Force, the newest Metroid Prime game coming out for the 3DS, will quickly join that camp. People are still whining about it, so much so that the subject came up in a recent interview with Nintendo of America exec Scott Moffitt, while speaking with iDigital Times. When questioned about the possibility of a ‘real’ Metroid Prime game for the Wii U, he had this to say:
“Metroid is really up to our game developers to decide how best to create new and different experiences. This Metroid experience [Federation Force] offers a local multiplayer feature that could be a lot of fun for game fans and we hope fans try it out and come to their own conclusions. I have nothing more to announce about a Metroid game for Wii U but let’s be happy for what we have. We’ve got something and let’s experience it and hope fans will enjoy.”
So… it’s not that the executives have put out a ban on the property or anything, but it’s just developers aren’t as keen as working on a new Metorid Prime game as any other property. Fine, fair enough. Although the “Be happy with what we have” does strike me as a little… inappropriate. Telling the fans who have kept you in business “BE HAPPY WITH WHAT WE GIVE YOU” is probably not a great idea, but to be fair he probably meant something a little more harmless.
Anyway, he also spoke briefly about Zelda for the Wii U, but just to say it was still on track for a 2016 release, and the only reason we haven’t seen more from it was because they want it to be at its best when they show it off. Their standard operation for new Zelda titles.
Altogether, a fairly straightforward bit of news, but good to keep in the back pocket… even if it does mean we’re likely not getting a Metroid game for the Wii U anytime soon.
