Nintendo Also Making A New Console, the NX

Big day for Nintendo fans, as I’m sure you’ve seen—this new smartphone deal is certainly a game changer for Nintendo, it’s fans, and gaming in general. While Nintendo has dabbled in developing for phones, going at it at this level is nothing short of earth-shattering—and we’ll all be watching the story develop on baited breath.

In the meantime, however, Nintendo wanted to take some time to assure its audience that just because it’s going to start developing mobile games, doesn’t mean it would lose its focus as a console game giant. Speaking briefly at the tail-end of the announcement regarding developing for cell phones, Nintendo boss Satoru Iwata comment on the next Nintendo console, apparently code-named the NX.

"Nintendo has decided to deploy its video game business on smart devices, but it is not because we have lost our passion or vision for the business of dedicated video game systems. On the contrary, because now we have decided on how we will make use of smart devices, we have come to hold an even stronger passion and vision for the dedicated video game system business than before. As proof that Nintendo maintains strong enthusiasm for the dedicated game system business", Iwata adds, "let me confirm that Nintendo is currently developing a dedicated game platform with a brand new concept under the development codename 'NX'."

...and that’s all we know. It’s not much to go off of, and he said we wouldn’t learn anything else about this new console until next year, but still—we know for a fact Nintendo is working on a new console. If we learn more about it next year, and we assume it releases a year after that, it means Nintendo's current console had a lifespan of about five years, piddling compared to the seven/eight year lifespan of the Wii, PS3 and Xbox One.

Exciting things are in the works for Nintendo… we’ll have to keep a close eye on this as it develops.
