Gaming historians (and folks who just like campy horror) will be intimately familiar with a title called Night Trap, one of the live-action games that were becoming more popular in the late 80’s and early 90’s. The game itself was fairly innocent, you played a security guard watching video feed (eeey) around a house, trying to catch vampires before they had a chance to feast on the scantly-clad woman who were living there. But misconceptions regarding the game (such as people claiming it was about trapping and killing women), the live-action scenes, and the scantly-clad woman caused such an uproar among conservative groups (remember back when that was a thing?) that Night Trap joined Mortal Kombat and Doom as a a main contributor in the creation of the ESRB we still use to this day.
It's not an easy game to get your hands on these days, as it was released all the way back in 1992, but to celebrate 25 years of shaping the game industry, Limited Run games is re-releasing all three Night Trap games on PS4 and Xbox One, with the PS4 even getting a physical disk.
Pretty cool, right? Unfortunately, there’s a lot we don’t know yet. Limited Run games has assured fans that the game has been recaptured using the cleanest surviving source material, which doesn’t really bode well for the quality of the video, and we’re not sure exactly how much this will cost. The only other things we really know is that it will be released sometime this spring, and that the ESRB has given it a T rating.
Ironic, huh?
While this is pretty cool, I would also argue that unless you fall into one of the two categories above, it’s probably not worth checking out Night Trap. It’s not an especially good game, and the effort to revive it over Kickstarter failed phenomenally. But, if you just want a conversation piece in your gaming library, you could do far worse…
…and I mean, to be fair, the trailer is pretty amazing.
