It’s not very often you hear that your console is getting a firmware update on a gaming PC website, and even less often you find yourself excited to hear about it. But just because it’s rare doesn’t mean it doesn’t happen, and the latest and greatest update for the PS4 promises to have some exciting and welcome changes for the leading console game system.

Called the 3.00 patch (or Kenshin, internally), this update has a whole lot of stuff in it, so let’s stop wasting time and dig in. We can expect…
  • An increase of our online saving capacity, from 1GB to 10GB.
  • You can now stream to YouTube in addition to Twitch.
  • A new hub for events, to help you keep track of things going on in your favorite games
  • Friend grouping, so you can put your friends in groups and invite them to a game all at once rather than one at a time
  • Communities, which are basically Subreddits except on PS4.
  • You can share 10-second clips of gameplay via Twitter.
  • The addition of Stickers, which function exactly the same as in Facebook
  • A “Now Playing” section, which is basically a place to spy on what your friends are doing with increasing invasiveness.
  • The “Live from PlayStation” app got a huge upgrade.
  • And finally, you can directly ask friends to watch them play, rather than hoping they’ll put up a stream.
You can check out the full patch notes here, which will have a little more detail on each of the above features, but you’ve got the jest of it. While this is certainly an impressive collection of changes, there is a caveat—we don’t know when the patch will be released. Sony anticipates it’ll be out before the end of the year, but it’s not impossible it’ll take longer.

Still—brownie points for Sony. Perhaps not as much as Microsoft has been earning recently, but points are points.
