Voting. It's our right as citizens to vote and have our voices be heard in the political election. However, it's not always as simple as that. Every election season, there are countless stories (both told and untold) of people completely unable to vote for some kind of reason. It may be because the day still falls on the incredibly inconvenient day of Tuesday. Sometimes it's because of the bureaucracy. It may be that the the polling places are spaced in a way to ensure a certain neighborhood has trouble reaching them. Or it could be downright illegal activity by employers or other voters who want to ensure their candidate wins.
And yes, it's often a racial thing.
Every year, the media make some attempt to cover a tale of voter suppression. This year, the New York Times released a video game called "The Voter Suppression Trail." Based on the Oregon Trail, the game shows a lot of the pitfalls many Americans must go through in order to make their vote count. It's a revealing work that helps put into perspective how, no matter what we all think, not everyone's voice has a chance to be heard. Check it out if you get the chance.
