PEGI, the European games ratings board, has announced a new policy change. Soon any game with microtransactions will require a warning label.

Any game that contains in-game purchases will now require a descriptor, displayed in the header, on the game's cover and PEGI rating. This covers anything has allows the player to make a purchase within the game using real-world money. This includes loot boxes, booster packs, cosmetic upgrades, etc.

A similar notice has already existed for digital games through the Internal Age Rating Coalition system, but this change means physical game copies will also be required to show the disclaimer. The change is expected to begin later this year.

This move is a step toward cultivating a healthier, less distrusting video game culture. It will also help parents keep a closer eye on the types of games they're purchasing for their kids. PEGI managing director Simon Little had this to say.

"Purchase offers within games has become a broad phenomenon, and it is necessary to provide the same level of consumer information on both physical and digital releases. Considering that physical releases are an important part of the market, this was an important gap to fill.
. . .
For a parent who may not be fully familiar with the video games landscape, seeing this simple descriptor on the packaging of a game they consider buying should trigger the reflex of keeping an eye on the gameplay, once the game has been purchased and given to the child. It's basic information, but that's what parents sometimes feel they are lacking."

Rating boards are the strongest arm consumers have against malicious market strategies. Publishers may be less inclined to strive for loot boxes and other in-game purchases if it'll alienate their game.
