New Metro 2035 Game Coming... Sometime

Not next year! Probably!

Metro 2033, the post-apocalyptic game where you battled throughout Russia's surprisingly spacious underground tram, as one of the last bastions of human life, was a pretty darn popular game that got an even more popular sequel, Last Light, which by all accounts was really good but was kneecapped in sales for... some reason. Despite their high quality, the Metro games never really got the fame some might believe they deserved, something that 4A Games, the studio behind the games, must be painfully aware of.

However, a lack of public recognition is no reason to wallow in self-pity: they've got a job to do, and according to the book's official website, that job includes making a third game for the series, which will take place immediately where the books leave off, turning the Metro universe into a surprisingly deep, multi-media franchise, and one that could very soon become a new and exciting reality!

I kid, I kid, sorry. That was tasteless.

Anyway, here's what we know: the game will launch in 2017, sometime, and according to the website, "It all adds up to something. Where the books end their story, the game will pick it up. An era of great discoveries lies ahead..."

At least, that's what it used to say: since then, the date and specifics of the project have been removed and have since been replaced with something vaguer. But, the internet never forgets, so... a little too late, pals.

What does that mean? Well, if it follows after the last book (which was supposed to release last year, apparently, but is only just coming next month), then learning what the last book is about would certainly give us some clues. The book follows series protagonist Artyom and his efforts to bring people back to the surface in a way that apparently intertwines the stories of the books and the earlier games. So... then... the next game will be on the surface? Maybe?

Or maybe I'm just groundlessly postulating. There's always that.

We always have that.

Update: According to Metro - The Game's Facebook page:

You may have noticed some sites have reported that a new Metro game would be released in 2017. Deep Silver has released the following statement... As the exclusive rights holder to videogames set in the Metro 2033 universe, Deep Silver has ambitious plans for the hugely successful Metro series. But just to manage our fans' expectations - releasing the next Metro game in 2017 is not one of them. When we have more news to share, we will. Thank you for your patience.
