I think I can speak for all of us when I say I’m looking forward to the games that make VR “worth it”.

Now, don’t get me wrong, I like the idea behind a virtual reality headset as much as the next guy, but if you look at the games being made for these devices, oftentimes they just amount to “PC Gaming in Fullscreen”, which is cool, but not exactly the next-generation thrillride we were promised by 80’s science fiction writers.

I speculated in the past that horror and pilot sims would be the dominant VR games for the early days of the hardware, and by the looks of things I was dead nuts. Granted, it wasn’t a hard prediction to make—horror games were just about the first games made for them in the first place and there isn’t a genre other than pilot sims where it could be completely immersive while only moving your head—but still, it wasn’t until EVE: Valkyrie that I got really excited for VR. Check out the new trailer, clocking in at a cool 3 minutes.

Now, my experience with the EVE universe is limited to admiring it from afar and being one of the beta testers for Dust 541, so I’m sure there were lots of stuff in that video that only an EVE aficionado could appreciate, but I still liked the big explosions and giant ships and cool graphics, so, something for everyone. It looks to be slightly more plot-heavy than most EVE games, and, from what I know, it’s not connected to the larger EVE MMO, the way Dust 541 is. Still, the opportunity to play a fighter pilot in one of the legendary space battles EVE Online is known for? Sign me up, sergeant.
