New Baldur's Gate Announced after Seventeen Years

Hail to the king, or something like that.

It was seventeen years ago that BioWare released Baldur’s Gate, an isometric Dungeons and Dragons RPG that’s well-regarded as an excellent game… and having a sequel that’s arguably one of the greatest games ever made. Due to its popularity and prestige, a while back, an enhanced edition of Baldur’s Gate was produced by some ex-Bioware developers over at Beamdog… and now that they’ve been out for a while and people have gotten re-acquainted with the world, the characters, and the now famous story, we have ourselves an exciting announcement:

After three years shy of two decades, Baldur’s Gate is getting a new expansion! Called Baldur’s Gate: Siege of Dragonspear, this expansion will run on the Infinity Engine and take place between the events of the first and second game. A brief synopsis:

“The events between Baldur’s Gate: Enhanced Edition and Baldur’s Gate II: Enhanced Edition are at last revealed in this exciting new expansion to the original game.

Though Sarevok is dead and his plan for war averted, peace eludes the citizens of Baldur’s Gate. A crusade marches in the north, seizing supplies, forcing locals into military service, and disrupting trade along the Sword Coast. A charismatic warrior known as the Shining Lady leads this army, her background shrouded in mystery. Can the rumors be true—is she, like you, the child of a god?

The closer you get to the Shining Lady, the more you realize your father, the dead Lord of Murder still casts a long shadow upon your path. Baldur’s Gate has put its faith in you, but you must determine whose interests you truly serve before you face the Shining Lady among the ruins of Dragonspear Castle…”

A proper Baldur’s Gate expansion/sequel? I know that was at the top of a lot of people’s wish-lists, especially since it’s coming from some people who worked on the original two. That said, the enhanced editions released by these developers were rather… buggy. Here’s hoping Siege of Dragonspear managed to avoid that particular flaw.

No date of release has been formally announced, but the developers assure that it will be released soon, likely later this year… with an iOS/Android port to be released sometime next year.  I, personally, haven't gotten around to playing these games, but I'm excited nonetheless, because there have been a lot of isometric RPGs coming out as of late... good to see the classics are also returning to show the youngins how it's done.

Here’s hoping we hear something more soon!
