It's the first day of E3 press conferences, and EA was the first up to bat. While we saw a number of new announcements, they saved their best for last. Today we were given a fair deal of new information regarding Anthem, Bioware's upcoming RPG.
The segment started with a new cinematic trailer. It was a rather well-made trailer, radiating its narrative strongly while Uprising, by Muse, plays in the background.
While this is all fun and exciting. It tells us little about what the game itself will be like. This is when three devs from Bioware came out to talk to an EA rep about Anthem.
They talk about the lore, gameplay, and even the multiplayer connectivity for the game, explaining that their ideas for the game. Anthem wants to create a long-lasting experience for their players. They designed the game "in a way so that we can add more story for years to come." They didn't elaborate further as to exactly what this means.
In the Anthem universe, the world itself is working against mankind, with a seemingly massive system called the Anthem of Creation. In order to survive in the outside world, people need to wear specialized suits called Javelins. You play as a freelancer skilled in Javelin usage. The main story of the game is centered around an organization known as the Dominion, who intend to weaponize the Anthem of Creation.
Throughout the game, the player will be able to swap between four different types of Javelins, the Ranger, the Colossus, the Interceptor, and the Storm. Each Javelin type has different skills and abilities, making them ideal for different situations. The Ranger is a generalized suit, good for one-on-one and up close combat, while the Colossus is a tougher, heavier suit good for dealing heavy damage. Your Javelin will also be visually customizable, ranging from a selection of different colors and patterns.
The devs encourage co-operative play, though they say it isn't necessary, simply easier. Players can solo the entire game, but they believe said players will have a smoother, more enjoyable time playing with others.
They also stated that Anthem will, in fact, have microtransactions. They confirmed that there will not be any randomized loot boxes or gameplay-affecting items, but that they will be more along the lines of cosmetic items. Little more detail was given.
Before concluding, they revealed a new, 20-minute gameplay trailer, giving viewers a better example of what to expect when going on multiplayer missions, and the gameplay therein.
Lastly, they give a new release date. Anthem officially launches Feb 22, 2019.
