Buckets of new information about Mortal Kombat 11 was released, from gameplay footage to new characters. Here's a collection of everything new we've learned.
Not long ago, NetherRealm Studios revealed the cover art for the game, teasing that more information was coming soon. Now "soon" has arrived, and it brought a bloody sack of toys for us to enjoy. The developers revealed all sorts of new information about the upcoming fighting game at a live event in Los Angeles Thursday.
Let's begin with the gameplay trailer.
In the trailer, we see the familiar faces of staple characters like Scorpion, Raiden, and Baraka, as well as some of the less common characters like Skarlet. It then dives deep into the action, jumping from moment to moment in various fights, all of gameplay. There are snippets of what can be assumed are campaign cutscenes scattered throughout.
It concludes by revealing Shao Kahn as a preorder bonus character.
Then came Geras.
According to creator Ed Boon, Geras can control time. This is seen in his reveal trailer as he "rewinds" himself, stops the enemy in place, and so on. He also appears to have a variety of sand based attacks, using it in the same elemental ways that Sub Zero uses the cold. We can only assume these are the sands of time or something cliche like that.
Geras fights in service of Kornika. She first appeared in the December reveal trailer for the game. Boon claims that Konika is the one running the show since the first Mortal Kombat, only now appearing after Raiden altered the timeline by killing Shinnok. There isn't any evidence that Kronika will be a playable character in MK 11, but we would be surprised if she isn't.
The last time someone tried to guess the roster list, Ed Boon himself roasted the person.
Next is the story.
The MK 11 storyline takes place right after that of Mortal Kombat 2011 (Mortal Kombat 9 to some). NetherRealms official description states that Raiden has upset the balance of history with the death of Shinnok. Tired of Earthrealms defiance, Kronika, The Keeper of Time will bring order to the universe through any means necessary.
Boon describes the campaign as a meeting between fighters and their younger selves. Though this has yet to be seen in official footage.
More info is likely to be revealed on January 30, when NetherRealm hosts their Kombat Kast live stream.
Mortal Kombat 11 releases on PC, PS4, Xbox One, and Nintendo Switch on April 23.
