We Happy Few was one of the most attention grabbing games of this year's E3. After viewing the trailer earlier this week, we all wanted to see more.
Am I the only one curious to take Joy?
Luckily, a Twitch interview helped give us many more details. First, the story. From what we know, the game takes place in an alternate timeline of England in the 1960's. In this reality, Germany supposedly won World War 2. We still don't know if there was one specific event that happened to put society on Joy, but its roots seem to dig into forgetting the past from 20 years ago. The social rules and laws dictate all citizens remain in blissful ignorance, by force if necessary. One of the quirks of the world is that productivity is nearly non-existent since there's all this pressure to be happy all the time.
Which explains why this is a typical work day
We also learned about a couple different mechanics in the game. It is supposedly procedurally generated. As far as to how that will specifically influence the game is yet to be seen. Also, different outfits will be available for the main character, Arthur Hastings. And throughout Arthur's quest as a "downer," these different outfits will alter how others see him. These details are plentiful, but mostly just increase the intrigue surrounding the game. The good news is that we don't have to wait long to get a taste. We Happy Few is hitting Steam Early Access and Xbox Game Preview on July 26.
