The brand-new Modern Warfare game has arrived, and people have been… well, maybe not “hyped”, but tracking it’s development closely. Called “Modern Warfare” and pitched as a soft reboot of the franchise that turned Call of Duty into a household name, bringing back the single-player mode – and a few other modes from the game’s history as well. It already broke records during the beta tests, and will probably be a big hit in some form or another… although it probably won’t match the game that it steals its namesake from. That said, if it even gets a fraction of its good press they’ll be in a good spot.
The catch with that, of course, is “good” press. Because they haven’t exactly got that at the moment.
See, while the game launched today Xbox One, PS4, and PC, not every version of the game is equal, per say. Because Activision and Sony just announced that one of the most beloved “modes within a mode”, Survival Mode, would be exclusive to the PS4 until October 1st, 2020.
If you weren’t keeping track, that’s a year from now.
Spec Ops, if you didn’t know, are short scripted missions that can be played solo or co-op, introduced in Modern Warfare 2. They’ve been missing from the series for a while, so fans were pretty happy to hear it’s come back. Survival Mode, which amounted to little more than a horde mode – was less specifically in-demand, but it’s probably a burn on PC and Xbox players to learn that the PS4 gamers will get a year with the mode exclusively… at which point most of them will have probably moved on, since Call of Duty is one of those yearly franchises.
This is hardly the first time Activision and Sony have buddied up for Call of Duty, and I doubt it will impact sales that much. Still a bummer.
