One of my favorite things about the modding community is their unpredictable nature. This time, modder Dropbox managed to import a test map of the Upper Cathedral Ward from Bloodborne into Grand Theft Auto 5, from Dark Souls: Remastered.
When the remaster released, modders quickly went to work parsing through the game's test files. FROM Software often will name unused levels with "m99" at the beginning of their name. When Dropbox opened these files, he discovered an early version of the Upper Cathedral Ward from Bloodborne. After taking this level file and importing it into 3D model software, they were able to export it into a GTA5 compatible map. So like any responsible modder would do, they made a video of Trevor driving around the map.
According to modder Lance Mcdonald, this level, as well as a recreation of the Boletaria level from Demons Souls, were from the original Dark Souls game, and not creations of the remastering team. This means that Bloodborne, released in 2015, was already being mapped out before Dark Souls was released in 2011.
FROM Software has often left unused content buried within a compiled game. Not long ago, data miners managed to find fully animated bosses within the Bloodborne game code. While on the surface, this seems like modders being silly, but this discovery opens the doors toward a greater understanding of these games and their development process.
