Doctor Who has been a cultural influence for almost 60 years now. And what a better way to respect the classic sci-fi franchise than with an official mobile idle game?
Announced by mobile developer East Side Games Group, a partnership has been formed with BBC Studios to develop an official mobile game based on Doctor Who. Kevin Jorge, Senior Producer at BBC Studios, describes the game as a chance for players to meet and collect a huge cast iconic characters from across the Who-niverse, relive fan favourite adventures and defeat iconic enemies as they try to save the Doctor in an exciting new story.
We know what youre thinking, though: so whats the deal?
You might not recognize their name, but East Side Games Group has been making quite the name for themselves lately in the mobile games world. They developed idle clicker style mobile games for major IPs. If youve seen Archer: Danger Phone, Trailer Park Boys: Greasy Money, or Its Always Sunny: The Gang Goes Mobile, then youve seen their work.
This gives us a pretty clear idea what to expect from this game. Itll have a bold-lined cartoon look, a storyline that encourages the gameplay, but with the meat of the game being centered around establishing buildings or people that produce products or currency that can be used to build more things, and repeat forever. The player will likely have to wait a certain time for both buildings to be built and for them to produce results.
The app will release later this year, and will be free to play. As such, we expect there to be microtransactions for premium currency, which can be used to skip the wait times within the game.
If we sound bitter, its because we are. This tried-and-true format isnt designed to create a rich experience. Its designed to maximize profitability. We have little to no faith that the experience will be worthwhile when they utilize this monetization format.
Regardless, the game is expected to launch at some point later this year as a free-to-play title for mobile devices.
