Minecraft's 10-year anniversary is right around the corner, and unsurprisingly, both Mojang and Microsoft are gearing up for a big event to celebrate the game, how much it’s grown and changed, and of course, the fans who have been with it every step of the way, the people who have spent millions of hours exploring, digging, fighting, and building magnificent structures that take your breath away. But there will be one big ol’ surprise at the event: a certain important someone won’t be invited.
We’re talking, of course, about Minecraft’s creator himself, Marcus “Notch” Persson. Talking to Variety, Microsoft has confirmed that he was not invited due to his behavior on social media, which they say they do not agree with nor wish to represent.
Indeed, over on Twitter, he’s on record as saying there should be a “heterosexual pride day” (a tweet he later deleted and backtracked), as well as saying “it’s okay to be white” (which he defended when he said privilege was a 'made-up metric').
Now, none of these are terrible – at least when judged on the standards of normal internet rhetoric – but they are sort of warning signs that maybe our old pal Marcus has been chowing down on too many red pills and is one bad day or one platform away from snapping and saying something really regrettable. Which, on one hand, I understand Microsoft’s caution in not wanting that platform to be the 10th anniversary of one of their biggest games and money makers. But on the other, it might be a little bit overzealous, and it is a shame that ol’ Markus won’t be at the celebration of the game he himself made.
Pity or not, though, I still wouldn’t feel too bad for Markus. He’s still got an obscene amount of money, an enormous house, and all the opportunities in the world to make himself a better, happier person. If he’s not doing that, he’s got no one to blame but himself.
