Minecraft to Fix Lethal Parrot Mistake

It's a bigger deal than you might think.

Minecraft is sort of a big deal, beloved by older gamers and sometimes worshipped by younger ones who thrive in the freedom of expression the game affords. Because it has such a huge impact on the lives of some of our most impressionable, it’s important that the game is a bit more responsible when it comes to educating and representing these vulnerable brains. So, something that might not normally be a big deal in a different game can be a huge headache for the folks at Mojang.

Case in point: a recent patch is under fire because it gave the player the ability to befriend, train, or mate parrots with the help of a chocolate chip cookie. Seems innocent enough, but as Redditor 1jl explains, it’s far from a non-issue.

I get that you want to give chocolate chip cookies a use in the game, but literally millions of kids will play this game and chocolate and pet parrots are common enough that this will cause a problem. There is no question about that. You can't tell me some 6 year old is going to play Minecraft and then try to feed their Mom's 45 year old Macaw chocolate chips or a chocolate chip cookies.
It's a minor change that will have major consequences. Thanks

It’s a good point, and let’s face it, some kids are stupid. It’s better to play on the safe side of things to make sure no one’s bird dies an unfortunate, avoidable death. Fortunately, Mojang agrees and has sent an email out to VICE Motherboard that they’ll fix the problem before the 1.12 launches, which is set to happen “sometime soon." They also said that the original reason they picked the cookie was because it referenced a Nirvana song, Polly, so you can’t fault them for having a sense of humor.

Regardless. It’s good to see them so response. Good job, Mojang.
