An official education edition of Microsoft's incredibly popular Minecraft is actually heading to schools this year. Though Microsoft announced the edition earlier this year, it wasn't confirmed for release this June until now. So what's the difference between Minecraft: Education Edition and the regular Minecraft? Well, the Education Edition will have all the tools from the original Minecraft, but there will be prebuilt locations included, such as Pompeii. The reason for the release month is to give administration and staff opportunities to test the program and plan their curriculum around it.
The game will be a free download for both OS X and Windows, and a beta will launch in May. Apparently 100 schools in 41 countries will be participating. If schools manage to secure a lot more funding for say... VR... imagine the possibilities with Minecraft and learning! Kids can be one step closer to exploring the world in blocky form!
Check out the video. It's pretty inspiring and adorable. Minecraft could be part of any class, like engineering, math, geography, and more! That's how awesome and flexible it is. Either way, teachers can look forward to tinkering with the Minecraft Education Edition this June. As for when? That will arrive in a later update assuredly.
