It's been a long time coming, but it's finally here. Miitomo, the not-so-popular social media mobile app by Nintendo, has officially shut down. We were given a fair heads-up about the closing, though it saddens me all the same.
Miitomo, loosely based on the hit 3DS game Tomodachi Life, lets users create their own Mii, which could connect with friends, create content, play games, and customize their digital homes and clothes. The app faltered due to its lack of control as to what content you either saw or put out. Instead of making posts and seeing other's posts in order of recency, users were asked random questions, and others were shown random answers by others. This made it difficult to see content that wasn't entirely dictated by the Miitomo algorithms.
The game company doesn't want the iconic character style to die out just yet. They recently announced that they are in development of an online Mii maker. Nintendo ID users will even be able to import their character from Miitomo. The feature won't be available for a while still, as Nintendo needs to transfer all of the Miitomo server data over to the online Mii maker.
The Miitomo website now directs to a single screen remarking on its closing. It also links to the final Miifoto event. Our sympathies go out to those who still used the app. Now that it's gone, I wish I had used it more.
