Well, as far as successful Kickstarters go, it’ll be hard to top Star Citizen, but Mighty No. 9 is still pretty dang impressive. Started by Megaman creator Keiji Inafune as an effort to get a new IP out on the market now that he no longer works for Capcom, it raised a good four million USD in pledges from excited fans, easily funding the title’s release for just about every system imaginable.
But being out on the Wii U, Xbox 360, Xbox One, PS3, PS4, and PC isn’t good enough, no sir. There’s still frontiers to be conquered by Beck and Call, and to help with that they’ve started ANOTHER fundraising event, this time over Paypal.
And what are they trying to do? Turn Mighty No. 9 into an animated series. Here, check out the trailer:
This news comes to us from Anime Expo 2014, where everything was announced, and a subsequent follow-up post on the official Mighty No. 9 website, where details are included. Right now, it’s a smaller effort than the original game was, and there’s only one streach goal: a full English voice cast for the digital show. That said, they also shared that any money donated at this point would go directly to expanding the show—every dime they were going to spend on the game was already raised during the initial kickstarter run.
As for what the show will actually be about? Basically, Beck is one of many battle robots who fight in an arena for human amusement—but when the evil Dr. Blackwell infects every robot with a virus that puts them under his control, Beck’s human heart is the only thing that spares him. Together with Call, his creator and some guy called Dr. Sanda, they’ll work together to put an end to Dr. Blackwell’s schemes.
Personally, this strikes me as a little… silly? Mighty No. 9 is popular but only because of the excitement of old Megaman fans—it hasn’t proven it’s really ‘worthy’ of a show quiet yet. So while it might be a rather arrogant move, heck, the trailer was fun enough, so maybe it’ll all be worth it.
They’re predicting the show will air in the second quarter of 2016.
