The highly anticipated sea-faring coop pirate game Sea of Thieves is only a week away. To celebrate the near-launch of the Rare-developed title, Microsoft shot a man out of a cannon.
An Xbox event taking place at the Raymond James Stadium in Tampa, Florida hosted the firing of human cannonball David "The Bullet" Smith from a 34-foot cannon branded with the game's name on the side. He flew 200 feet through the air (about as far as the Leaning Tower of Pisa is tall) onto a gigantic air cushion. A video of the event was posted on Twitter.
The Guinness World Records has confirmed that this is a new world record for the farthest distance for a human cannonball. The previous record was 193 feet, set in 2011. Allegedly, David Smith's father of the same name had broken the record at 200 feet in 2001, but it was never recognized by the Guinness World Records.
The reasoning behind the event is due to the popular mode of transportation in the Sea of Thieves game. Players, when near shore, can fire themselves out of their ship's cannons with relatively no harm.
Sea of Thieves will release on March 20 for Xbox One and PC. I'll see you all on the high seas.
