After removing the Kinect from the Xbox One’s box earlier this year, Microsoft confirmed that the motion-sensing camera would at some point be available for purchase separately if you opted to buy an Xbox One without the device.
Through a post on the Xbox Wire Microsoft has announced a release date and pricing for when the device will be sold on its own. The Kinect will launch in a bundle with Dance Central Spotlight on October 7th, and will run you $149.99.
It's worth noting that it does cost more to buy the Kinect-less Xbox One and buy the camera separately than it does to purchase the Xbox One with the Kinect. The Xbox One with a Kinect costs $499.99, while collectively the bundle without the Kinect and the camera itself costs about $549.99. So, if you're at all intrigued by the Kinect, it might be worth tracking down an Xbox One bundled with the camera.
Recently, Microsoft spoke out about the decision to remove Kinect from the Xbox One’s box, stating that it’s still committed to the motion-sensing camera, and hopes that developers will still utilize it despite the fractured install-base. However, Head of Xbox Phil Spencer doesn't want some studios to be defined by the device, similar to how Rare has been since the latter half of the Xbox 360’s lifetime.
