Sony isn't the only game company concerned with climate change. Microsoft has also made a promise at the recent UN summit, promising to help make a different kind of change.

Yesterday was the United Nations Environment Committee meeting. Here, numerous nations and organizations got together to make commitments toward fighting against climate change. One gaming-centric example was Sony, who promised to improve the energy efficiency of PlayStation consoles, reducing carbon emissions indirectly.

And they aren't alone. Xbox will be making a similar effort.

Microsoft released a statement, detailing plans for achieving carbon neutrality throughout the tech giant's entire workplace. This included a plant to improve the carbon footprint from Xbox consoles.

"Microsofts business operations have operated carbon neutral since 2012. Today we are beginning the journey of extending that to our products and devices with a pilot to make 825,000 Xbox consoles carbon neutral. These are the first gaming consoles to be carbon neutral. While just a pilot, were already looking at what we can do to further reduce and neutralize carbon across devices in the future."

The rest of Microsoft's statement centers around production and internal development. This is arguably the most important environmental aspect of a business. They don't go into detail about the consoles themselves, but we can only assume these efforts will be dedicated toward the upcoming Xbox Scarlet console set to release late next year.

None of this is particularly surprising from the company. They announced a plan back in 2017 to reduce emissions by 75%. Hearing them instead reach for total neutrality is even better.
