Discord is one of, if not the, most popular voice chatting software and instant messengers among gamers. While the voice chatting and messaging itself isnt that fancy, the ability to stream games, share screens, network games, and host servers makes it a pretty good service for gamers specifically, although those servers are used for a lot more than just MMOs and matchmaking, let me tell you what. And you probably know all that, because if youre on this site, you probably use Discord too.
What you might not know because Bloomberg just posted it earlier today is that apparently Discord may not remain independent for much longer. As apparently, Microsoft is trying to buy it at the tune of over 10 billion dollars. Which is a lot of nitro boosts, if you know what Im saying.
This might seem concerning, but theres reason to relax: for one, this report has not been verified by either Microsoft or Discord, so it could always be false. Secondly, the report claims that Microsoft is just one of many people queuing up to buy Discord, so its not impossible theyd fall into the laps of a less enormous enterprise. Finally, and most importantly, the consensus among experts seems to be that Discord would more likely go public, and rake in sweet sweet investment dollars, over making a one-and-done deal with Microsoft.
Microsoft, for what its worth, has been on a spending spree as of late, and the idea that they would try to buy Discord is intensely believable its not as if they have a IM that could remotely compete, at least in the gaming space. But that spending spree is exactly why people dont want to see it happen: theyre getting just a little too big for comfort, and concerns about monopolies are on the rise.
But its all a big question mark for now.
