Yes, everyone has been clamoring about for a Metroid title, but this 3DS title is just one of the two that are in development.
For this article, let's focus on the "reimagination" of the Game Boy game Metroid II: Return of Samus. This is developed by MercurySteam, the team before the early 3DS title, Castlevania: Lords of Shadow.
And this game looks absolutely fantastic.
What about a release date?
September 15. So excited!
After the announcement came an in-depth discussion and demo of Metroid: Samus Returns.
Here are some of the specific details:
- Samus has free-aiming. You can point wherever you'd like with a 360-degree range of motion.
- Samus has a beautiful melee counter. If you time it just right as an enemy swings at you, you'll experience a cinematic counter hit.
- What is unique to this title are the "Aeion abilities." They are not suit upgrades so much as limited abilities that rely on an energy gauge. One is called "Scan Pulse," which lets you display more of a game's mini-map in a small area around you. You'll be able to find hidden paths and items with this ability.
- Similar to the Game Boy title, you'll be on the hunt for Metroids immediately.
- You can rely on "map pins" to track a location.
- The title's soundtrack is being composed by two of the composers from Super Metroid.
- The game has enhanced 3D effects. Supposedly, it looks good.
- Apparently, from the menu screen, there are a two of 40 different Metroids scattered throughout the game.
- You can bomb-jump.
- Samus Returns has fast travel stations known as "Teleport Stations."
- You'll have audio cues to rely on when meleeing the Metroids.
- You can tear off the enemies from the wall via grapple beam.
- There are two new Amiibos: Samus in her Metroid II cover pose and a squishy Metroid Amiibo.
Anyway, look forward to this 3DS title on September 15.
