Metal Gear Solid 5 Gets Surprise Update, Making Quiet Playable

Only in FOB missions, but hey, it's a thing.

In a move that frankly surprised everyone, Metal Gear Solid V got an update recently. Yeah, you know, the three-year-old game? The last game made by Kojima before he went his own path and started selling his acid trips as E3 trailers? The last good Metal Gear Solid game that will ever be made?

It’s not a big update by any stretch of the imagination. They added a few new weapons and tools (like an energy shield and a ‘dark matter generator’ that blocks line of sight) for FOB missions, adds a new level of difficulty for the event FOB missions, and perhaps most importantly, enables you to play the scantily-clad lady-sniper Quiet on FOB missions.

You can play as Quiet to infiltrate FOBs. You cannot change her uniform or head options. She is an expert with a sniper rifle, and her steady hands let her take her shots with minimal shaking. Quiet’s movement speed is extremely fast and allows for unique jumping abilities over high steps where a player would usually need a ladder. She can close in on enemies quickly with her special dash, while remaining still for a certain amount of time will make her stealthy.

Cool, I guess. It’s not that strange that Konami is still supporting Metal Gear Solid V, it’s just about the only good video game they’ve released in recent memory (Lookin’ at you, Survive), but it still feels a bit weird to be talking about it still. In fact, the last update to the game was almost exactly a year ago, when Ocelot was made playable in FOB missions, and they introduced swimsuit outfits for your FOB soldiers. So I'm not sure what they've been doing in the meantime, but... I guess this is still pretty cool to the people still playing.

But man, has it really been three years since Metal Gear Solid V came out? Feels like a lifetime ago.

It's been a long three years...
