Good news for all you Metal Gear Solid fans out there-a group of modders called “Outer Haven” have recently gotten approval from Konami to make a reboot of the classic Metal Gear—and it will be given away for free.
Now, I know what you’re thinking: “my Playstation 1 still works just fine! Why would I need a remake?” Well, you silly, this isn’t a remake of THAT Metal Gear—we’re talking seriously retro. This remake will be of the original 1987 NES Metal Gear. What’s more, since it’s going to be built on Valve’s free-to-play Alien Swarm engine, the game is going to be in full, complete 3-D—still from a top-down perspective, though, so don’t go thinking it’ll be a first-person romp this time around.
And yes, the group actually did contact Konami—these days, a lot of fan projects will be shut down by companies (namely Nintendo), so it’s good practice to get their OK before you get started to make sure all your effort wasn’t in vain. It was Konami who told them the game had to be free (making money off someone’s IP is a tricky situation and can lead to a slippery slope) so I guess that’s double the karma points for Konami.
Oh, and, one last thing: exciting as this news is, the Outer Haven group could use more people. So if you’ve got a working knowledge of C++ you can contact them at outerheavendev@gmail.com
