Wargaming.net, otherwise known as the creators of the word phenomenon World of Tanks and the significantly less popular spin-off World of Warplanes, have finally got a hold on a new IP… and when I say “new” I mean “very old”, but in today’s gaming old the two terms are practically synonymous.

The IP in question is Master of Orion, one of the first 4X games on the market, originally produced in 1993 for the PC. It’s considered one of the best examples in the genre, and is critically acclaimed to this day. Wargaming.net bought the IP from Atari following their bankruptcy in 2013, and this will be the first we’ve seen of the Masters of Orion series since 2003. Check out the trailer.

While we know very little about the game itself, the developer, NGD Studios, assures us that it will be a reimagining of the series, will have a new UI, voice acting, and original score by the original composer of the first game, and will presumably include new elements and take new inspiration from the modern gaming world.

Exciting news? Hard to say. This is an old series, with the ‘newest’ entry having come out twelve years ago, so I imagine old veterans will be few and far between. That said, the game’s reputation does proceed it, and the 4X style of gaming is getting more and more popular with the success of titles such as Civilization and Endless Legends.

But it ultimately falls to the developers to make lightning strike twice, I suppose. Here’s hoping NGD Studios is equal to the task.
