Mario Kart Tour, Nintendo's most recent mobile game based on the popular racing franchise, will be getting genuine multiplayer here soon. Don't get too excited though, early access to the mode is hidden behind a monthly subscription.
In an announcement via Twitter, Nintendo revealed plans for a beta session for real-time multiplayer for Mario Kart Tour this December, allowing anyone with a Gold Pass Subscription access to the beta.
For those unaware, Gold Pass is a $4.99-a-month subscription service for the mobile game that unlocks 200cc speed mode and various cosmetic awards.
This dampens what would have been a saving grace for the game. Mario Kart Tour's gameplay is moderately enjoyable but quickly sullied by the heavy grind needed to unlock additional characters and karts. Unless you pay real-world money that is. Real multiplayer would be a fantastic way to breathe fresh life into the game.
It's worth noting that they aren't going to keep multiplayer behind a paywall the entire time. Only the early access beta for multiplayer will be. Details about the official release of the mode are not available yet, though. More information about that will likely be released after the beta.
Mario Kart Tour is available now for iOS and Android devices.
