For the past few years, Magic Leap has been working on augmented reality. They recently shed some light on what exactly that will be. We learn about Lightwear, the AR goggles powered by a small computer at your hip, known as the Lightpack.

The Lightwear gives the user control via a small handheld controller. One that uses haptic feedback to create a more immersive experience.

The first of the hardware, known as Magic Leap One, will be shipping out sometime in 2018. A software development kit and a creator portal should be available next year as well.

The idea behind the Lightwear is to take the world we see in front of us and combine it with computer generated objects. While this is comparable to Microsoft's Hololens, Magic Leap intends to take it to a new level. It utilizes a digital light field that will blend seamlessly with natural light to produce lifelike digital objects that coexist in the real world.

This advanced technology allows our brain to naturally process digital objects the same way we do real-world objects, making it comfortable to use for long periods of time,

On its website, Magic Leap presents a few augmented reality scenarios designed for Lightwear, including 3D web browsing, display screens on demand, virtual meetings and, of course, gaming. Magic Leap showed off a concept video of a first-person shooter a few years ago in which a normal office setting was fantastically transformed into a robot shooting gallery.

Some possibilities for this technology include 3D web browsing, floating info screens, virtual meetings, and even video games. We can see examples of all of this with a concept video Magic Leap released over 2 years ago.

You can learn more about Magic Leap at their website.
