Mad Catz Returns from the Dead

Back and better than ever.

Earlier last year, gaming peripheral creator Mad Catz filed for bankruptcy, leaving a weirdly-designed controller-sized hole in all of our collective hearts. The company had been around since 1989, and while the quality of their controllers and such could be debated (and often was), it was strange seeing a company that’s been around longer than I’ve been alive vanish from store shelves.

That said, there’s good news for any Mad Catz aficionados out there, if such a thing exists: the company is coming back!

"Less than a year after the much-loved brand disappeared from the gaming landscape, Mad Catz is back: under new management, with new ideas, new attitude and most importantly, an entire range of new, high-quality gaming products. The new Mad Catz will focus first on quality, committed to producing innovative gaming products, designed and engineered in-house to stand out amongst the competition and deliver superlative performance for gamers of all abilities."

It’s no coincidence they’re talking about improved quality: that was the typical complaint people had about their products, which, you know, isn’t a great reputation to have. They plan on putting their money where their mouths are later this month, when they show off their latest products at CES, which will start this Sunday, on the 7th.

Such new products will include an air-hockey like mousepad, a keyboard with aluminum frame and RGB lighting, and new gaming headphones that, and I quote, have “40mm neodymium drivers, swappable earpads, and oxygen free copper cable”, which is apparently supposed to make things sound… better?

You can check out their new products on their website, right here. This looks neat, and to be honest I find it weirdly comforting to see them come back, but all the same, it looks like they’re now making the kind of stuff I could never justify spending the money on, so… that’s sad. Kind of.
