Solo? Open-world? Do whatever I wish? Yeehaw.

A couple of Diablo veterans surprised us earlier last year with the reveal of a sci-fi beauty known as Rebel Galaxy, complete with 3D starships. Only two people have developed the game - these people being Travis Baldree and Erich Schaefer, known for their work on Diablo, Fate, and Torchlight.

To describe their recent project, Rebel Galaxy is a mishmash of Privateer, Assassin's Creed: Black Flag, Star Control 2, and Sid Meier's Pirates. Both men have both been seeking a change of pace from the fantasy realm of gaming, which is perfectly understandable. To describe the game itself, Rebel Galaxy is to be big - you are given command of a starship, and you are allowed to travel in a vast galaxy. You have plenty of options within the game: you can accept side quests, strike down some space pirates, possibly harm innocents, and more. Your survivability is dependent on your skills as a space pirate or pilot. The combat takes place in third person, limited to a 2D plane - so a bit like a side-scroller. In terms of exploration, there are plenty of areas to visit, all open-world... wait, open-galaxy.

However, do not let this description fool you into thinking this is a multiplayer game. The game is focused on solo play, but that shouldn't damper the experience.

Quoting Baldree:

"We just wanted to make something other than fantasy games for a change."

The game is expected to be priced cheap, about $20. So a game where you take control, be whatever you choose to be (even a villain), and blow up whatever you like. Also, if you're curious as to what engine the game is built with, Rebel Galaxy actually utilizes Torchlight's engine. Unfortunately, there is no official announce date for this except for sometime later this year, but it's best to keep your eye on this anticipated game, set for release on PC and PlayStation 4.
