Long Lost Sonic Relic Surfaces as a Playable Tech Demo

By playable, I mean a train-wreck.

Sonic the Hedgehog has always been beloved, but at the same time, we know that it has been going downhill for years. Most players agree that the best Sonic games were the classic ones, save for probably Sonic Generations.

We can forget the monstrosity that is Sonic '06.

Well, apparently there was a Sonic game that was cancelled over two decades ago, called Sonic X-treme. A group of die-hard fans have finally uncovered the source code and ported the long lost game to the modern Windows PC, so now everyone has a chance to play.

Probably to the dismay of the one person that paid $2,500 for what was presumed to be the only playable version.

However, it is advisable to not get your hopes up of doing much with the game - there is only one level, complete with poor controls, bad camera, and non-interactable objects. Really, Sonic can't collect rings or hit any of the enemies.

But hey, the enemies can't hit you either, so that's a plus!

Unfortunately, Sonic X-treme was a project that was far too ambitious for its time. Though the game was announced in all the major gaming magazines, and it seemed like a sure thing, developers bit off more than they were able to chew by attempting to create an open-world 3D Sonic game.

The fans behind this excavation project has announced that they are still working on the code and plan to release more playable levels in the future. For now, if you want to try out the "game," you can do so by following this link.
