We werent expecting to be blindsided by a cheek clappin rhythm game when we woke up today. But Internet personality and music star Lil Nas X had different plans. Introducing Twerk Hero, a rhythm browser game based on the artists latest music video.
Those more tuned into social media may have noticed a controversy of sorts recently regarding Lil Nas X, the musical artist known for the hit song Old Town Road. They have a new song called Montero (Call Me By Your Name). The music video drew the ire of more conservative folks with a scene of Nas X riding a stripper pole down into hell and giving Satan a lap dance.
So what else was he to do beside make a game? The musical performer announced Twerk Hero on their Twitter feed.
Developed by Roni Games, Twerk Hero is an in-browser Unity game where the player has to move around Nas Xs booty in rhythm to a snippet of Montero. The main goal is to hit the oncoming arrows on screen with his cheeks (they call them Temptations) for a high score. As you move, the naughty bits jiggle. The name is inspired by Guitar Hero, one of the more prolific rhythm games in the world.
There are multiple levels, and if you get to the end (spoilers) a ragdoll body of Nas X falls on top of Satan.
Is it a good game? No, not really. But thats not the point. I dont think anyone actually expects a piece of Triple A media to come out of this. Its drawing attention to the drama around the song. People are upset about a music video, and this game stokes those flames. It exaggerates the sinful nature of the video, showing how unbothered the creator is about the evangelical criticism its been met with. Good. More power to him. You dont have to like the song or the video. But anyone actively upset about its existence and stay mad.
If youd like to play Twerk Hero for a couple of minutes before deciding you get the gist and never playing again. You can do so at www.monterocallmebyyour.name.
