Fighting games have always had a steep hill to climb in order to attract more casual players, and that mostly comes from having to learn complicated controls. Games like Super Smash Bros and Soul Calibur have done well in regards of having an easier learning curve, but still plenty of depth. In the last year Divekick has particularly stood out... full of fighting game in-jokes and a simple 2 button control scheme that's really anything but simple.
Indie game studio Reptile is looking to strike on this formula as well with Lethal League. At first glance you see the baseball bats and think this is a hybrid of that sport-- but really it is much more similar to Racquetball, a sport that's hardly been represented in video game form. The action is also very reminiscent of the game that started it all, Pong... only in this case you want to avoid having the ball touch you.
Lethal League will be coming to Steam this summer with online multiplayer that makes use of GGPO (the same excellent netcode as Skullgirls and Divekick). The game is also geared towards high level competitive play, so don't be surprised if it pops up at a few LAN events or fighting game tournaments this summer as well. You can try out the browser based prototype of the game right now on their site.
