Let Me Introduce You to the Steamboy

This picture is ultimately unrelated, but it's also called SteamBoy and it's a rather good anime film.

Just when we thought we’d seen it all…

Look, Valve has very few surprises left in store for us, at least as far as their oft-forgotten Steam Machines go: most of the models had been shown off to the public, the OS they plan to use is available to the public, and theoretically you could start building a Steam Machine now, since they released part lists for some of their builds. All we had to do--so we thought--was wait for the damn things to be publically released. But like all things Valve does, the process is slow… laborious, even.

But as it turns out, Valve isn’t just sitting on its hands and playing with its thumbs—it still has surprises in store for us yet, one of which was revealed the last day of Gamescom.

Ladies and gentleman, let me introduce you to the Steamboy: the portable Steam Machine… through this extremely underwhelming trailer.

Here’s what we know: it’s set to be released late next year and will cost around $299 bucks if you pre-order before November 10, 2015, which… well, is a pretty demanding order, considering how little we know about the damn thing. According to an official report, it has 4GB RAM, a 32GB Internal Processor, a 720p touch screen and HDMI output, an AMD embedded G-Series SoC 'Steppe Eagle' with Jaguar-based CPU and, finally, GCN-based Radeon graphics. And while that’s a whole lot of fancy computer words, it doesn’t tell us a lick about the device itself.

Regardless, it is what it is: a mobile gaming device for Steam. I doubt it’ll be much of a contest against the 3DS, but it might be a competitor for the Vita. We’ll just have to see.
