Legends of Runeterra is Gonna Get Way More Complicated Soon, Probably

If you were bored enough over the weekend to read my first impression of Legends of Runeterra, you’d know that I think it’s actually quite good: it’s simple enough to be easy to grasp, complicated enough to accommodate many different kind of strategies, it’s absolutely gorgeous looking, and, best of all, since it hasn’t been around for very long, the mechanics it employs to keeps cards unique and balanced are relatively small and straightforward. None of the insane mechanical plays and power creep you’re expected to know for, say, Hearthstone or Yu-Gi-Oh.

Well, that’s all going in the crapper soon, because in a recent interview with PC Gamer, executive producer Jeff Jew claims that a whole lot of extra content is already near completion, and it promises to complicate the game immensely.

"We’re also working on multiple sets right now… I can’t go super deep into what those sets are or how many there are, but several of them are nearly done at this point. We’re balancing them still, we have a little art to do, but they’re real sets. We’re playtesting them."

And it’s not just new cards we can look forward to – it’s new game modes entirely, something the game rather needs as it only has a standard match and an “expedition”, which lets you build a deck from randomly selected cards.

"We are actually in the early development of a few ideas for modes—nothing I can talk about today—but our goal is to make the game feel fresh and let you use your cards in different ways."

This might be good news for you if you’re already getting a little sick of the Darius/Elise decks that seem so very popular these days, but I’ll reserve my opinion to see how Riot chooses to monetize these extra cards and modes…
