League of Legends had the Most Popular Subreddit in 2020

Not sure why, but it was.

Reddit, sometimes called the front page of the internet but more often considered its unlocked dumpster, just released their retrospective of 2020. As you might expect, it's horrible. And not just for the usual Reddit reasons, but also because this has been a terrible year. You know something is wrong when the third most upvoted post on the site was, and this is a direct quote, "Please make this go viral. I am begging you. Police and National Guard patrolling neighborhood and shooting civilians on their own property. Make America see this, I beg you. [Minneapolis]"

More uplifting facts: Covid-19 was mentioned 50.2M+ times across the whole darn site, the most searched for topic was for career workshops, and police brutality was one of the top trending hashtags. But by far the most depressing thing to come out of the whole retrospective was the news that apparently, the League of Legends subreddit was the most active subreddit in the whole gaming space, which means that garbage game for troll people must be getting more popular.

(I'm exaggerating for comic effect if it wasn't clear).

In any case, League of Legends beat out the other contenders on the list, which, in order, was Minecraft, Animal Crossing, Fortnite, and Destiny. That's no indication of the game themselves, of course, as Reddit is a better metric of the culture surrounding those games. There's no doubt that Fortnite is the most popular on the list, but when it comes to memes, cosplay, and stupid internet stuff we do for stupid internet points, it seems Riot game's decade-old MOBA takes the cake.

So... congratulations? I guess?
