The official Lawbreakers YouTube channel recently published a new trailer announcing an upcoming free-to-play weekend. Starting this Friday and running throughout the weekend, all Steam users will be able to download and play Lawbreakers for free. This special occasion does not extend to PlayStation 4, however.
The video itself is surprisingly well done. Footage of a policeman explaining what it's like to use a gun stylized in a '70s aesthetic is combined with various moments of fast-paced gameplay. The two ideas blended together quite well, and the game footage was almost entirely gameplay. All things considered, it was a rather well-made trailer.
The problem doesn't lie in their video production skills, but in the game itself. Only three months after the release of Lawbreakers, the active player count dropped down to as low as 50 players. The game's life crashed hard. Some players blame bad game balancing, some blame the non-engaging style, and some even blame the lootcrate system. Lawbreakers tried to be an edgier cyberpunk alternative to Overwatch.
It's not hard to see how this is an attempt to rebuild the player-base, but will it actually help retain players, or just be a spike in player count. I expect that in enough time, the game will go free to play entirely, or shut their servers down. You can see the trailer for yourself below.
