It began May 29, 2019, when a live stream was held for the game. Instead of a standard reveal or gameplay viewing, portions of the screen were blocked off from view. The only way to increase the visible areas was to tune in. The more people watching the stream, the more it would show.
Eventually, it would reveal a new trailer, seen below.
The trailer gives us the greatest clarity toward the game yet. It establishes that there are isolated societies that need connecting, that there are specific folks tasked with transporting goods, and that there are rebels that are looking to actively prevent this. It also confirmed the official release date on November 8, 2019.
It also spawns a few new questions, like "why do the weird invisible darkness monsters teleport the player to what looks like a hellish recreation of World War 2?" and "What exactly is the purpose of the 'bridge baby' he sometimes carries on his stomach?" Given the history Kojima has for complex and outlandish stories, this kind of confusion is only expected.
Kojima has offered some explanation in an official statement.
Death Stranding is a completely new type of action game, where the goal of the player is to reconnect isolated cities and a fragmented society. It is created so that all elements, including the story and gameplay, are bound together by the theme of the Strand or connection. As Sam Porter Bridges, you will attempt to bridge the divides in society, and in doing create new bonds or Strands with other players around the globe. Through your experience playing the game, I hope youll come to understand the true importance of forging connections with others.
Death Stranding will also feature a unique way of connecting players together. Players can send supplies with each other indirectly. They can also come across the footsteps of other players, giving them some insight as to where other couriers have gone.
More will be made clear about the game when it releases on November 8, 2019, exclusively for the PlayStation 4.
