It's Lara Croft GO; this is a bit of a surprise and such a big deal, assuredly. That said, it certainly deserves the award, considering the amount of love put into the game. Even I've been addicted to it when I was able to pick it up on sale. Between the visuals and the quality of the puzzles, it has brought a few hours of fun for me and more than likely a bunch of others.
According to Patrick Naud, studio head of Square Enix Montreal:
"From its legacy to its dedicated fan base, the Lara Croft franchise demanded and deserved the best GO adaptation we could possibly deliver. We worked tirelessly to make Lara Croft GO a truly special experience, and being chosen by Apple over so many other games is a humbling reflection of our team's passion and hard work."
Lara Croft GO also managed to win 2015 Mobile Game of the Year at The Game Awards and Canadian Video Games Awards.
So that's something for Square Enix Montreal to be proud of. If you don't own the game and are looking for a good puzzle adventure, then I highly recommended it. In fact, a free expansion titled "The Shard of Life," which includes new puzzles, monsters, and collectibles, has been recently released.
Lara Croft GO is available on Google Play and the App Store for $4.99.
