The final Nintendo Direct has concluded, confirming the last of the fighters to be included into Super Smash Bros Ultimate. Ken and Incineroar have been confirmed for Smash, with Piranha Plant confirmed for release after launch.
Nintendo hosted a Direct Thursday morning that focused exclusively on the upcoming fighting game. This is a live video feed press event that is fed "direct"ly to the consumer. The video began by settling the most anticipated topic by Smash Bros fans: who are the remaining fighters?
It begins with Ken. The red-wearing antagonist of Street Fighter, this American martial artist bears a similar fighting style to Ryu, though with some variation to his skills and abilities. This includes a fire element to certain attacks. In Smash Bros, this is seen in a modified moveset.
It then introduces Incineroar. This is the Fire/Fighting-type Pokemon from the most recent generation, Sun and Moon. One of the three starter Pokemon, Incineroar is a pro wrestling style character, which is seen heavily in his moveset. He even poses for the crowd after landing a successful hit. It's noted that the Pokemon game describes him as a Heel. This is a wrestling term for a fighter that is intentionally antagonistic, riling negative responses from the crowd.
The direct continued to introduce new features and mechanics, such as the Spirits adventure mode, Online functionality, and so on. They made it clear that those two fighters were the final additions to the release edition of the game.
Then there was a plant.
Game director Sakurai announced that those who pre-order the game before will be awarded a special, free-for-a-limited-time fighter: Piranha Plant. That's right, the plant enemy that comes out of pipes in Mario games.
