Kartridge will be a new service for PC games, akin to Steam, Itch.io, and Humble Bundle. They will offer multiple payment options, such as paid, free-to-play, and pay-what-you-want. They want to create a place that encourages social interactivity. It will also offer discounts and deals through in-game achievements.
With indie studios in mind, the terms are stacked in the developer's favor, according to Kongregate CEO Emily Greer.
Our initial plan is that the first $10,000 in net revenue, one hundred percent will go to the developer, and after that, well go to [30 percent retail margin]. We think that for smaller developers especially, that first 10,000 in revenue is really important.
When asked about how they plan to compete with the other major digital retailers, she responds with faith that their support for indie developers is what will help them stand out.
"Were not coming in just to build another store. No-one needs that. This is about building a platform that is focused on creating a very fair and supportive environment for indie developers. We have a different point of view from Steam on a lot of things."
Greer also expressed interest in a broadcasting service but states that it's a future idea for now.
Could Kartridge compete with the existing markets? Or will it fall to the wayside?
